Real Talk College Talk
This is our annual event where we invite high and middle school students from the community to attend the event. This event is open up dialogue about the topic of college. Students receive information about the ins and outs of college from a panel of people who have attended college and have attained their degree. The panel shares their stories and experiences in college and there is a portion where the students can ask the panel any questions they have about college life and what to expect. The purpose is to open the student’s viewpoint about college and relieve any stress about going to college by asking much needed questions they have about college to the panelist. This event happens twice a year; once in the fall and again in the spring. The reason is to get them prepared for the beginning of the school year and again towards the end for students accepted into college to get them prepared for that next level.

Daddy's Day Out
This is our annual event where we get the students and their father’s to come out to Lake Vista Community Center and spend a day playing games and spending time together. The purpose of this event is for the fathers and students to build relationships with each other. It’s been noted that having a father in a child’s life increases confidence and much more. Our goal is to have the father in every step of these students life so they can succeed and have that support from their father. FI the student does not have a father in their life, we get their mentor or other mentors in the community to fill in for the day so that the student doesn’t feel left out of the group. Our first event was last year which was an instant success. We had multiple groups of fathers and children playing and enjoying themselves. We were able to give out raffle prizes and this year, our goal is to give out a $500 college scholarship to a high school senior.

Parent/FAFSA Night
Fafsa night is an event where I invite parents and their student out and we all sit down and fill out the fafsa application together. In my career as a school counselor, I’ve noticed that students don’t receive funds because parents don’t fill out the fafsa, or they fill it out too late for the student to receive funds. This event will eliminate some of that because each parent will fill out their fafsa for their student as a requirement for the program. There will be a fafsa informational night prior to filling out the fafsa application so that the parents are aware of the documents needed to complete the application.
